Ubuntu Netbook Edition with Unity looks funny?

Question by The one of purity: Ubuntu Netbook Edition with Unity looks funny?
I recently tried to install the new unity layout on my x41 thinkpad tablet by typing “sudo apt-get install ubuntu-netbook” into the terminal. It seemed to work, but when I logged in, it looked like this (see screenshot below)

When I hoped it would look like this:

Best to pose this question on the Ubuntu forums.

http://ubuntuforums.org/

I think the first Pic is the regular version of Ubuntu and the second one is the “Netbook” look. So, what you installed is the Netbook edition of Ubuntu. I know this because I put the Netbook edition of Ubuntu on my wife’s Netbook.

Why is my internet so slow, only when I use Facebook?

Question by Joni: Why is my internet so slow, only when I use Facebook?
When I use Facebook, the screen just doesn’t seem to respond, and if it eventually does, the screen layout might be distorted and it takes an age! When I try to go onto a new website then, that one doesn’t load and when I try and close the whole window, it does the windows signal beep sound and it just won’t let me. Once or twice a message has come up saying that a script is causing Internet Explorer to run slowly. In the end, I have to go and end iexplore.exe through task manager. Before, I’d only every seen one of them running, and I keep finding about 4 when I have the problem. I have McAfee security, using wireless Internet on a Netbook “Samsung NC10″ I haven’t tries to use Facebook through another machine, but why is it doing it and how can I stop it?

How do I connect my “NETBOOK” computer to my old Dial-Up Internet service?

Question by honesty_counts: How do I connect my “NETBOOK” computer to my old Dial-Up Internet service?
A friend of mine has the same, but she uses a USB-Robotics External modem that connects to one of her USB ports.
I don’t see a regular telephone-jack port, but there is an ETHERNET port on it. What type of external modems can connect to this Ethernet port, and then allow me to connect to a regular phone line? Does BestBuy or any other store haves something like this?

Can I use ADOBE illustrator and or photoshop on an ACER “NETbook?”?

Question by mabs: Can I use ADOBE illustrator and or photoshop on an ACER “NETbook?”?
I’m poor and want to get an ACER netbook but I neeeeeed to use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop on it. I already have these programs and the requirements for these programs are met by the ACER but… it’s called a “net” book so I’m just scared it won’t work well. Does anyone use these types of programs on an ACER? Thank you.

Answer by BigWILL
If the Acer Netbook has Windows on it then I am sure it will be capable of running Photoshop and illustrator. Being a netbook it is not designed to run hefty applications, due to a slower processor speed, less RAM, onboard graphics, and generally slower components, but it will be able to run them, albeit it may be a little sluggish.

Just look at the system requirements of the program and make sure you have enough disk space to install it, enough RAM to run it, and you have an appropriately set virtual memory setting, again with enough disk space.

Also when running it, shut down all non-essential applications, and be sure that you have ample disk space on your drive. There probably will be limits on what you can load, but this will be governed by the amount of RAM and disk space available.

Q&A: Should I get a netbook or a real laptop?

Question by apples2apples: Should I get a netbook or a real laptop?
I need some sort of “laptop” for school. i know netbooks are smaller and cheaper and i only need to use the computer for looking stuff up online and for typing reports. But- the netbooks don’t have a optical drive so theres no way i can load microsoft word onto them. I don’t know what to get. I have small hands so the keyboard factor wouldn’t make that big of difference. thanks for all your answers!

Trouble connecting netbook to tv?

Question by marilyn: Trouble connecting netbook to tv?
I bought a VGA cable today to connect my netbook to an HDTV. Both ends have the 15 pins and an audio jack. It fits perfectly into the tv but is lose in the netbook. For my TV’s source I selected “PC”. When I plug the cable in the “no source” is no longer on the TV screen, but the screen goes black. There isn’t the little holes to screw the little things on the side into like the TV has. What am I doing wrong?
Thank you!

Answer by ThePhenom
Well yea u r correct there aren’t any holes on the netbook, it works fine without it

Nothings really wrong all u gotta do now is when the netbook is connected, jus press on your keyboard

ctrl+f4

that is press and hold ctrl, while holding ctrl that press f4 key.

then a menu pops up and you can choose what kind of display do you want, u could either choose “dublicate” or what i usually choose is “projector only”

Hope i helped you! =D

sounds like an IP issue.
You should make sure that in the IP properties for your wireless connection, everything is set to “determine these settings automatically”
and that you aren’t trying to route through any bogus proxies

Q&A: Does this sound like a good deal or am I just going to have to put out a lot more money?

Question by Schmoe: Does this sound like a good deal or am I just going to have to put out a lot more money?
I need a netbook for a trip and I saw this ad. Does it sound like a good deal?

“Unfortunately our netbook went on the fritz and needs a new hard drive. Instead of fixing it we have purchased a new p.c. For the computer savvy person I think this is a steal.”

I know this is a stupid question but are hard drives all the same? Can one from a PC be put in a netbook?

My husband can do all the work (it’s his job and his hobby) so I don’t need to know how to do it, I just need to know that I’m not getting ripped off before I buy it.

I can’t tell him because he won’t let me buy it but once it’s mine, he’ll fix it. I just don’t want to buy it and find out it needs another 40$ put into it or something. My husband has lots of extra hard drives lying around if they’re all interchangeable.

Thanks.
Shoot, sorry. They’re asking 60$ .

I’m (clearly not computer savvy) but my husband definitely is.

Answer by Zero Chance
Well you need to ask him/her if he still has the original installation Cd if he does not dont bother buying the Netbook.

You will need a small Sata Harddrive to use in the netbook. Desktop ones are to big

Q&A: Do the “netbook” and “tablet” form factors fit well into the long term evolution of home computing technology?

Question by Chip: Do the “netbook” and “tablet” form factors fit well into the long term evolution of home computing technology?
First off, just a forwarning: This is an opinion question, therefore I don’t think it’s right to pick a “Best Answer”. This question will be going to vote.

I just read an article saying that the sale of netbooks are slowing now that people have more money for traditional notebook PCs, and it got me thinking: do netbooks and tablets really fit in with where computers are heading?

My personal views are that computers are moving towards a three-tiered form factor: A stationary tier, a semi-portable tier, and a fully-portable tier.
The stationary tier is currently fulfilled by what we call Desktops. Computers in the stationary tier hold the most processing power and data storage capacity, and act as a central server for the home. It is my belief that as computers evolve, the “Desktop” as we know it will cease to exist, and that it will merge with televisions to form a single, do-all flat panel unit that gets hung up on our walls.
The semi-portable tier is handled by notebooks (aka laptops). Not quite as much processing power or storage capacity as your stationary tier, but still has a decent visual display and keyboard, so it is comfortable for doing lengthy tasks while away from home. It has a little bit of storage space itself, but is able to link up to your first-tier computer and stream movies/documents/whatever that it doesn’t have room to hold locally. The current clamshell design I think is most efficient, and will likely stay for quite a long time, much in the same way the pedal+steering wheel design has stayed with cars pretty much since inception. I do not feel that netbooks really fit in to this category, because their displays/keyboards are too small to make performing long tasks (like writing a paper) comfortable. Likewise, I feel tablets don’t quite fit either due to their complete lack of keyboard.
Lastly, the fully-portable tier is taken up by our mobile devices, our cell phones. With this tier portability is the key component, with processing power, data storage, and efficient interfacing taking a back seat. These are always on your person and always at the ready to perform quick tasks such as sending messages or updating a calendar, but doing something lengthy like writing a report is uncomfortable and better suited for a second or first tier computer. Can link up to the data stores on your first-tier machine to stream movies, documents, and other media that it doesn’t have room to store itself.

So there is my opinion. I think that netbooks and tablets may continue to fill niche markets where there are special needs, but for the broad scope of the computer-using population, I don’t really think they’ll ever be common place. I would love everyone’s views on the netbooks/tablet’s longevity as a form factor, and while your at it your opinion on my three-tiered idea of computer evolution would be great too.

Again, all of this, and all of the answers, is nothing but conjecture and opinion. Feel free to answer and get your two points, but do not expect a “best answer” selection from me. Everyone is entitled to their views.

For me a netbook is too small. I have big fingers and, at almost 68, less than perfect vision.

A tablet is a solution looking for a problem. I have no need to use a computer where I can’t sit and type on a keyboard. (I don’t even like using a notebook keyboard.) If I need fast mobile access (internet or to take a short note) I have a cellphone with a little keyboard. If I need the power of a tablet, I have a pretty powerful notebook, but I’ll find a place to sit. Maybe if I were a salesman and the company used electronic order forms (I’ve designed more than one system that works that way), but not for my own use.
