Would a netbook with 1gb be slow?

Question by Christina C: Would a netbook with 1gb be slow?
I want to buy a netbook and I’ve found one i like. It has 1GB ram and 160BG harddrive and I wanted to know if 1GB would be too slow? I would use it for browsing the internet. Playing music and installing MSN and things. Would it be too slow for those tings or would it be ok? Also what does “refurbished” mean? Thanks in advance x

1GB is the amount of memory, and the amount will only directly affect the speed of your computer if it starts running out. 1GB is still a good amount of memory for this kind of machine: I was routinely running XP on a laptop with half that until fairly recently and only upgraded it because I was making very heavy demands on i with programs like Photoshop. The processor speed, disk performance and type and speed of access to memory will be the other major players in speed, but I doubt you’d have anything to worry about for what you’re trying to do. The hard drive is big for a netbook (many are only 80GB, though big 2.5″ disks are now vastly cheaper after being stuck on a plateau at around 60 – 80 GB for quite a while), so it is probably quite a recent machine.

Essentially you’re not doing anything very challenging for a reasonably up to date computer pretty much whatever the spec.

One thing to watch out for – some netbooks only have Linux installed. Not that there’s anything wrong with Linux, on the contrary, but it may not be what you’re used to and you may not be able to get the programs you want or find it easy to install them – so check first.

Refurbished means (should mean) that it is not new but some of the parts have been replaced to make it more like new (but may only mean it has been cleaned!).

Should I be returning my new “netbook” or is there something I can do?

Question by Jen J: Should I be returning my new “netbook” or is there something I can do?
So today I found a great deal on a little netbook. The person at the store assurred me that if I were only getting it to use online (which is true) that its capabilities would be just fine. So I get it home and connected (was never able to figure out the wireless mouse though) and I get online and to my great disappointment all of the apps look like they do on my little cell phone!

Let me give you an example, I do a lot of Facebooking. I have one of those virtual aquariums that is a hobby of mine. Can’t get on it! I was sooo mad. Now the thing is the person at the store did warn us that it was a very outdated version of Windows. I do not know what version unfortunately but guess I could look it up if I had to. My question is can I update Windows on the little machine so that I can view my stuff and use my appications properly? Or is this it for this machine and I’m returning it??

Please let me know! Thanks!

Sure!
For apps on FaceBook such as FarmVille, Happy Aquarium, Restaurant City, FishVille, etc, you are probably missing Flash.

Go to www.adobe.com and look for Adobe Flash Player.

Or just click on this link:

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=BUIGP

And it is most likely you are running Windows XP since, most retail stores say that XP is outdated. But by far, XP is still stable to keep you browsing online.

Basically, all a netbook is used for is, web browsing, storing documents, and that’s pretty much it. A netbook isn’t supposed to work like a laptop.

Netbooks are usually about 10.1″ – 11″ maximum, ultra portable, very light, built with the least powerful processor from Intel, Atom, and has a hard drive that can go up to 160GB, with at most 2 GB RAM.
So pretty much you can’t expect a netbook to do high end performance later on.

also, every PC comes un-setup. this saying, it won’t have much programs and stuff installed already for you, to play and watch videos and games online.

Wireless Internet Connection Problems?

Question by Sally Lynn: Wireless Internet Connection Problems?
Windows Vista Home Premium 2007

Studio XPS 1640

Intel(R) Core(RM) Duo CPU

2.40GHz

4.00 GB

64 Bit

I’ve had my computer for almost three years now and during that time, most parts on it have been replaced.

Most recently, I’ve had both my hard drive and my wireless card replaced due to different issues and now, it’s come up recently that I cannot connect to the internet wirelessly. I live with my best friend who also owns a Dell laptop and I myself own an Acer Netbook and an iPhone, both which connect just fine to the wireless internet. It seems to be only my system that is having this problem.

I’ve spoken with the Dell Support Reps over 5+ times and nothing has solved this problem. They simply tell me it is a software issue and I must purchase some System Repair thing for $ 100+ (even after spending $ 600 on a warranty that apparently only covers hardware).

Obviously, I can connect just fine to through an ethernet/wired connection but not wirelessly. Its not that the connection does not show up at all, it shows up and says it connects, but I get ‘Local Only’ access. This isn’t the first problem I’ve had with my wireless either; I’ve had other errors such as: “The capability of this network adapter does not match the requirements of this network” or the connection will show up but their will be grayed out as if I’m not receiving any sort of connectivity.

If there is any more information I can give to make this easier to understand, please let me know. I’ll post the Windows IP Configuration if it’s needed to help solve this issue.

Short version:

-New harddrive

-New wireless card

-New router

-Other devices in the house connect wirelessly

-Local only access

-Using Google Chrome

-No internet access

-”There may be a problem with one or more network adapters on this computer.”

-”the capability of your network adapter does not match the requirements of this network”

Is this a Vista problem or what?

right click the bars you click to access the wifi signals
select “open network sharing options”
select ” set up a connection or network”
select “manually connect to a wireless network” and click “next”

type in your network name,
security type: will either be wep, wpa personal, or wpa2 personal….depends on what you have set
encryption type is most likely “AES”
Type in your networks security key
check the box that says “connect to this network automatically”

Q&A: How do I delete a fake internet explorer icon?

Question by Diane: How do I delete a fake internet explorer icon?
Yes, it’s a virus, I know. But I’ve tried stopping the explorer.exe process and that doesn’t seem to do it and since my computer believes it’s “the real deal,” I can’t use the Unlocker and just get rid of it like its friends.

(Long story short, friend had a virus on a flash drive that jumped onto my netbook. Four new icons showed up with occasional popups. Now, I’ve managed to get rid of everything but for this fake IE icon. And because I can’t get rid of it, it’s buddies come back each time I reboot.)
By the way, sorry I forgot to mention this earlier but safe mode doesn’t work (just sends me back to the safe mode options screen) and system restore won’t even load.

And don’t worry, I’ve tried deleting it normally. Clearly I’m asking around because that won’t work.

I have an Aspire One “netbook,” model ZG5, pre-installed with Windows XP.?

Question by ectmax: I have an Aspire One “netbook,” model ZG5, pre-installed with Windows XP.?
I need to know where to look, either “inside” or outside the notebook for the correct series of numbers/letters that permit me to check for updates and other pertinent information on the Acer website. The Acer site uses a drop-down menu below the model name (Aspire) to further denote the notebook’s identity. How do I find that odd series of numbers/letters? Thanks. Ed.
Good point Doug. I should have noted that I did examine the underside of the notebook and attempted to match up the various numeric sequences with those listed on the Acer drop-down menu. I could find no matches, or even anything close. Although it doesn’t take much, I’m truly stumped. Thanks for the reply. Ed.

why does my new computer keep messing up my typing?

Question by vrock: why does my new computer keep messing up my typing?
i am a mac-to-windows user (don’t know if operating system has anything to do with it) and i have a full-size keyboard on my laptop. when i’m typing, no matter if it’s in microsoft word or anywhere else, it sometimes stops typing where i am typing and then starts randomly typing part of a word somewhere else where im typing, like into another word. it is extremely annoying, and i wish i could do something about. does anyone know why this is happening? i use a mouse because my touchpad is pretty sensitive. my laptop (“netbook”) is dual core pentium 2gigs of ram don’t know if that matters.
thank you for that information

Answer by Fordry
Welcome to the wonderful world of completely stupid engineers designing laptop interface layouts. Its your palm resting on the touchpad and “clicking” somewhere else as you type. I personally would never buy a laptop unless the touchpad is centered or very close to centered on the keyboard. I have no idea why the laptop makers think that having the touchpad offset from the keyboard is a good idea, its a completely stupid idea. Anyway, I think there are ways to get the touchpad to disable when you are typing, you might want to look around for that.

Question about ‘Tablets”? Explain?

Question by Daniel O: Question about ‘Tablets”? Explain?
I have been seeing alot of ads for tablets and they seem to be fairly cheap compared to a laptop, so what exactly are they? It is like a laptop but without a lid or what? Can I do everything a laptop can do like yahoo, facebook, twitter, email, youtube and all that good stuff? Is it better than my netbook? And…would it work with my wireless router like my laptop…are they wi-fi, or can you take it anywhere with you…like a cell phone? Thanks in advance for explaining this to me!

A tablet is like another brand of an iPad. More of a phone than a laptop.

Tablet or netbook for vacation?

Question by Untitled-8: Tablet or netbook for vacation?
I’m looking to get something smaller than my laptop for a vacation this summer. It will be used for videos and basic web surfing.

My price limit is $ 100, so I have 3 choices.

1). Very cheap netbook running Linux of Microsoft CE

2). Cheap tablet from China. I’ve seen 7” tablets for $ 80

3). Handheld “tablet” device like ipod Touch or a smaller Archos tablet. I’ve seen thes for $ 80-100.

So which would be better for a vacation? I know the handheld is nice because it can fit in a pocket, but the screen is also smaller.
Oh, and options 2 would be running Android, and 3 possibly.
@ Bob, I already have a fantastic and powerful full sized Lenovo (which I love by the way). The tablet/netbook would be more of a travel companion. I already carry the Lenovo many places in a backpack, but as small as modern laptops are, they are sill somewhat inconvenient.

I’m really leaning towards a tablet right now. I’ve had an Asus EEE PC 10.1” netbook that costs $ 330, and it was great for small tasks, but I would imagine one as cheap as $ 80 wouldn’t be so great. The tablet is nice because you can really just put in in a sleeve (not clothes pocket, but actually carrying sleeve), and slide it in a backpack or just hold it.
